GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Understanding the Language of Permitting Made Easy.

Municipality

The local city or county government responsible for reviewing and approving permits and inspections for construction projects at a given address.
Example: Miami-Dade County, City of Orlando, etc.

Permit Type

The specific kind of construction or work that requires approval from a municipality—such as electrical, plumbing, roofing, HVAC, etc. Each type has different requirements and inspection steps.

Document Template

A pre-formatted file or checklist prepared by Inspected.com that matches the document requirements of a specific municipality for a specific permit type. Used to ensure all submissions are compliant and complete.

Project Note

An internal comment or note added to a project by a team member. Used for record-keeping or coordination—these notes are not visible to external users.

Project Message

A message exchanged between the contractor and the Inspected.com support team (or internal team), typically related to a specific permit or task. Includes communication history and updates throughout the permit process.

Appointment

A scheduled time for either a plan review or an inspection, where a contractor or inspector meets (virtually or in-person) to complete the necessary review. Appointments may be available same-day or next-day, depending on the municipality.

Plan Review

The process of submitting plans and documents to a municipality (or Inspected engineer) to be reviewed for code compliance before a permit is approved. This step must be passed before work can begin.

Inspection

A review performed (virtually or in-person) to confirm that the permitted work was completed according to code. Some permits may require multiple inspections at different stages of the project.
